Arrival - A Science Fiction Masterpiece

Sci-fi movies are not new to us especially to those born in the 20th century. Alien invasion movies are common in this genre. Arrival is not just plain old Sci-Fi movie but a movie with eight Oscar nominations, the second most nominations in the upcoming event. Arrival, the 2016 science fiction movie directed by Dennis Villeneuve was based on a short story by Ted Chiang titled 'Story of Your Life." When we think about Sci-Fi, we make ourselves believe that it is the future, but in Arrival, both present and future are interlinked. This movie all about aliens, linguistics and the attitude of humans in time of crisis.

Twelve mysterious UFO's land on various parts of the globe randomly. Linguistics expert Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) and theoretical scientist Ian Donnelly is brought together to investigate who they are and why they are here. The confident and influential character of Dr. Louise acted by Amy Adam is excellent and it makes her worthy of an academy award. Communication and its flaws are highlighted in this unique Sci-Fi blockbuster. Filled with full of  twists and metaphors, Louise understands that written language is the only means of communication with those aliens. The darkness looming in the mind of Louise and the bitter realities which she finds out are crucial points in the movie. The movie has become a bit dry at the certain points but the talent of Amy Adams overshadows it.

The quiet, emotional and uninterrupted flow within the plot makes it more impressive. Villeneuve hasn't relied too much on CGI like in 2016 movie Independence Day which failed to impress fans and critics.

Arrival is a movie which has talented artists in its cast like Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker and Michael Stuhlbarg. It is one of the best movies of 2016 and was well received by critics. This movie is a must-see movie for fans of the genre sci-fi and its complex structure is magnificently constructed. The score by Jóhann Jóhannssen and the cinematography of Bradford Young become plus points for the emotional background which director Villeneuve creates. The movie begins and closes with the Max Richer's piece "On the Nature of Daylight".

The art of deciphering the language of the aliens is vague in the movie and the truth behind the visitors is considered to be one of the biggest twists of the decade. Arrival makes you about think about concepts like life, death, love and communication and it is  the undisputedly best Sci-Fi movie of 2016.
